Most hosts hand you cPanel and add the licence to your bill. We went the other way and built our own control panel — WebDeck — and it’s included with every VM6 hosting plan at no extra cost.
This week it got a sizeable update. Here’s what’s new for you.
Restore one file, not the whole site
Everyone’s had the moment: a plugin update breaks a theme file, or a config gets overwritten, and the only way back is restoring the entire site — losing every order, comment and upload since the last backup.
WebDeck 2.2.8 changes that. Your sites can now keep point-in-time snapshots alongside their normal nightly backups. Open one from your Backups page, browse it like a file manager, and pull back exactly what you need:
- a single file, restored straight into place
- a whole folder — an uploads directory, a theme
- a database, as it was on that day
Everything else stays exactly as it is. No full restore, no collateral damage.
Backups that don’t cost you bandwidth
Snapshots only store what actually changed since the last one, so keeping a month of daily recovery points costs a fraction of a month of full backups. Your full archive still runs — weekly, or nightly if you’d rather — and the snapshots fill in the days between.
Everything goes to off-site storage, as it always has. Losing the server doesn’t lose your backups.
A new look for the panel
There’s a new interface design in this release, alongside the existing one. Both come in light and dark, and if you’re a reseller your branding — logo, panel name, accent colour — carries through either of them.
Nothing switches on its own. The classic look stays exactly as it is unless you choose otherwise.
Quieter about itself
Web servers normally broadcast their exact software version to anyone who asks, which is the first thing an automated scanner looks for. There’s now a single switch to stop that — one of a number of security improvements in this release, including signed communication between your panel and our licensing server.
Why we build our own
Running our own panel means a fix takes days rather than waiting on a vendor’s roadmap, and it means we’re not passing a per-server licence fee on to you. It also means we use it ourselves, every day, on our own production sites — which is a different kind of quality control to reading a feature list.
WebDeck is included with VM6 hosting at no extra charge. If you’re already with us, it’s updating automatically; log in and you’ll find the new backup options under Settings → Backups.
Not with us yet? Have a look at our hosting — UK-based, and the control panel comes with it.
